Despite Assurances from District,
Chemical Tank Backs Up Again
For the second time in a little over
a month, the chemical waste tank at the high school
backed up into a classroom. This occurred despite the
District making assurances that the tank was working
"fine." This backup contained black particulates
that were larger than the January, 2008 backup. The
custodial staff was again summoned to remove the contents
of the backup. The contents were stored in a dirty bucket
and no samples from the backup separated for testing.
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) was
again contacted. The DEC is currently investigating
if proper protocol was followed in the clean-up and
disposal of the contents of the backup.
The Association continues to have concern
regarding the manner in which the District is addressing
this problem. The classroom was deemed safe by administration
for the return of students and staff without any assessment
of the backup. An emergency plan did not appear to be
followed regarding the clean-up and disposal of the
backup.
The problem with the chemical tank
backup is reaching the point of absurity. The District
has continued to make excuses for its disrepair for
years. It is not unreasonable for the Association to
expect students and teachers to be protected from potential
harm due to dangerous chemicals. It is unfortunate that
a governmental regulatory body, which threatens large
punitive fines, needs to be contacted in order for the
District to meet its obligations.
