CTA Pressure on Board of Education
Results in the Start of a Health and Safety Committee
After receiving numerous complaints regarding
health and safety concerns, the CTA leadership investigated
the District's responsibilities in addressing these issues.
It became apparent that the District was not in compliance
with certain Commissioner of Education regulations. More
specifically, it was apparent that the District did not
have a required Health and Safety Committee in place.
This was brought to the attention of the Board of Education
and the Superintendent of Schools through discussion and
in written correspondence (see letters sent to Dr. Groveman
at compliance.htm
and regulations.htm).
As a result, the District has finally agreed to start
the required Health and Safety Committee and is soliciting
members from each bargaining unit.

The CTA is still awaiting the requested
information regarding compliance with other Commissioner
of Education regulations. Despite two requests, the CTA
has not received this documentation.
The start of the Health and Safety Committee
immediately preceeds the visit to Connetquot School District
by representatives from the New York State Committee on
Safety and Health (NYCOSH) and New York State United Teachers
(NYSUT). They will be visiting several schools where teachers
have expressed health and safety concerns.
