Tony spent time during the year assisting on a job site helping to put up the walls to a new house. Tony stated, “it was very gratifying, working along side my teacher colleagues, the many students who participated in the build, as well as the family who was to live in the house. To see the passion and commitment on everyone's face to get the job done was tremendous.” Felicio also went on to say, “if you have never experienced working on a build with Habitat, you should consider volunteering a little time to do so. Not only are you giving back to the community and helping others, but the experience is personally, very rewarding.”
Congratulations to Mr. Wilans and to all of the students and teachers who took part in this very worthy cause.

Association Leadership Shows Support for Verizon
Workers
The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA)
President, Tony Felicio, Jr., joined members
of the Communication Workers of America (CWA)
as they picketed in Patchogue. CWA Verizon
workers went on strike after management demanded
almost $20,000 in givebacks and would not
move from its position. Verizon is looking
for these givebacks despite billions of dollars
in profits. CWA and all unions believe that
this is a direct attack on unions and the
middle class.

‘EVERY CHILD’S DREAM’ a
Reality
The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA)
led an enthusiastic group of colleagues over
to Sayville, NY, to help make ‘Every
Child’s Dream’ come true. More
than two dozen current members of the Connetquot
Teachers Association, and their families,
volunteered to distribute coats, sweaters,
hats, gloves, scarves, blankets and school
supplies to more than 600 of Suffolk’s
homeless and needy neighbors. Event organizer
Ken Mangan was pleased with the turnout of
volunteers and guests, which made this 5th
annual event the biggest and best so far.
Invited guests were served
on linen-covered tables, by waiters and waitresses
wearing white gloves, in the colorfully decorated
auditorium of St. Lawrence the Martyr (founded
in 1895) Church in Sayville, NY. CTA member
Christine Dassler arranged for the teachers
to sort and distribute coats, or assist in serving
the guests. Suffolk’s homeless and needy
guests were served snacks, dinner and dessert,
and then had the opportunity to select from
hundreds of pieces of gently used, as well as
new, ‘winter wear’ that had been
donated for their use.

Raise Funds for the American Cancer Society
The Connetquot Teachers Association
recently announced the successful conclusion
to the 2010 Daffodil Days fundraising effort
to the teachers, clerical staff and other staff
members who made it possible. Coordinated by
Nancy Dunlop (Connetquot Teachers Association)
and Dorothy Schweers (Connetquot Clerical Association),
the 2010 Daffodil fundraiser raised close to
$3,500 for the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Dunlop revealed that “…besides
the generous donations made for the sale of
the daffodils, 20 community members made $25
donations for the ‘Gift of Hope’,
or a ‘Teddy Bear & a bunch.”
‘Gifts of Hope’ donations led to
the delivery of flowers and teddy bears directly
to pediatric cancer patients in area hospitals.
This year’s fund-raising
effort was coordinated by members of the Connetquot
Teachers Association, Connetquot Clerical Association,
building secretaries, Central Office personnel,
Food Service workers as well as Custodial staff.
Connetquot High School’s ‘Helping
Hands’ club members, under the supervision

Elementary
Computer Survey Indicates Many
Computer Problems and and an Adverse Impact of
the Elimination of Elementary Computer Positions
The Elementary Computer
Survey was developed with the goal of understanding,
in greater detail, the impact on student education
from the many simultaneous changes in software,
hardware and the network at the same time that
the elementary computer positions were eliminated.
A total of 149 elementary teachers answered the
survey, representing approximately 44% of the
elementary teachers.
The results indicate there are many problems with
the computer software and hardware that are adversely
impacting the education of students. The survey
also indicated that the elimination of the elementary
computer teachers has had an adverse impact on
the teachers' ability to integrate technology
and curriculum in their classrooms, which is not
being addressed through the newly implemented
Ambassador Program. Finally, many teachers indicated
that they thought the many changes to the computer
hardware, software and network at the same time
that computer teacher positions were eliminated
were poorly planned and that insufficient thought
was given to the impact on the education of students.

Ronkonkoma, NY
- The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) proudly
announced that the district’s teachers played
a vital role in the third annual ‘Every
Child’s Dream’ Holiday Celebration
on December 12th. Twenty-five current, or retired,
Connetquot teachers and friends helped distribute
coats, blankets, scarves and gloves, as well as
serving dinner to almost 600 guests.
Over the course of the last 15
months, the Association has on at least three occasions,
notified the District of serious issues at the Connetquot
High School. Our concern was due to continuing toxic
waste back ups into the classrooms overflowing from
the chemical waste tank. Our concerns center around
the improper handling, analysis and disposal of
such waste.
The District has maintained on
their website and through direct communication with
the Association that they have addressed our concerns
on many occasions. Furthermore, they denied that
back ups into classrooms took place (see photographs
below). They assured the Association and the community
that the classrooms were free of any contamination.
Due to the ongoing health and safety
problems at OBMS, health and safety training was
provided by NYCOSH and the Association to more than
60 teachers at OBMS.
Report on the Health and Safety of the District
School Buildings
The Connetquot Teachers Association
brought the New York Committee on Safety and Health
(NYCOSH) to inspect buildings in the District. This
resulted in a report that indicated many health
and safety problems that can affect the health and
safety of students and staff.
New York State Education law requires
that all District's form a Health and Safety Committee.
The Connetquot Teachers Associations brought the
District's lack of compliance with this law in October,
2006. The District held its first Health and Safety
Committee meeting in January, 2007.
