Connetquot Teachers Host Volleyball Fundraiser to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

On October 15, 2008 Justin Hertz, Connetquot’s Girls’ Volleyball Coach, & Physical Education teacher at Ronkonkoma Middle School, had his team take to the court against rival West Islip High School as part of the ‘Dig Pink’ fundraiser in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Justin’s team was up to the challenge, and raised $2,500 while defeating the visitors in the first three matches.

Health and Physical Education teacher Brianne Hertz, also from Ronkonkoma Middle School and Karen Edwards, a computer teacher at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School, both junior varsity coaches, worked with students, teachers and a number of local sponsors, to make the day a total success. Through bake sales, t-shirt sales and generous contributions from supporters, this volleyball team’s total of $2,500 put them at the top of the Suffolk County donor list for 2008.

"Connetquot’s teachers play an important role in the lives of their students during school hours, but teachers such as Justin and Brianne Hertz and Karen Edwards are examples of teachers going the extra mile, on their own time, to benefit members of the community," said Loretta Powell, President of the Connetquot Teachers Association. Explaining the success of the ‘Dig Pink’ contest, Justin Hertz, characteristically modest, insisted on giving credit to the girls on the team. He pointed out that they had decorated the gym on their own, and convinced their friends and family to attend, and contribute to this important event.

The coaches also expressed their gratitude to Blondies Salon for donating ‘pink’ hair extentions that were being used at the time of the volleyball game. Congratulations, and thank you, to Connetquot’s Volleyball Coaches and team. Their efforts will go a long way toward making more people aware of this disease, and help bring about a cure sooner, rather than later. Karen Edwards & Justin and Brianne Hertz are members of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA).
